So your best friend's a mythical creature? If you're Misaki Makishima he is. Chikyu Misaki is manga where this young girl just can't seem to catch a break. She's had to leave everything she knew back in Tokyo to live with her single father in the backwoods town her parents grew up in. It's a town so rural, they still celebrate a creature called Hohopo, a long necked, lake dwelling animal reminiscent of the Loch Ness monster. And if that isn't bad enough, her dad is dating again! How could it get worse? When Misaki meets Sanae, a classmate, things start to look up for her...a little. But, it doesn't take long for things to start falling over, or mainly, for Sanae Chan to fall into the frigid waters of Lake Hohoro. Could she really lose her only friend so quickly? Luckily a miracle happens and Sanae is saved by...Hohopo! Things really start to get crazy when Hohopo turns into a human! Now Misaki has to smuggle him home and have him fit in. With a new name (Neo) he's given a chance to live amongst humans. If only getting wet didn't change him back so easily! It's a struggle for Misaki and Sanae to keep their new friend a secret, but it's not easy when a ruthless kidnapper out for gold knows he holds the key to finding her lost treasure in Lake Hohoro. Chikyu Misaki is a great fantasy story. The art style is very unique and the plot twists and turns, really keeping your interest. It looks cute, but it's very edgy and suspenseful. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up and it keeps you guessing. Where did Hohopo come from? How does he transform? Why is Misaki convinced she remembers him from her early childhood and what does it have to do with her long departed mother? The characters are fun, witty and complicated. Everyone has something a little more that they aren't telling. Check out Chikyu Misaki to unravel the multiple mysteries and find out if Misaki can finally settle into her new home.
